A Vintage Post Office Cottage

The Old Post Office in the pretty village of Higham provides a wonderful base to explore the beautiful countryside of Dedham Vale, closely associated with the works of John Constable.

The cottage features in his painting, The Stour Valley from Higham. This beautiful timber framed building has lots of space to relax in, with a cosy wood burning stove in the sitting room.

Dating from the 1600s, this property has a wealth of features including exposed beams and fire places and provides a perfect property for a family get-together, allowing you to have a relaxing and peaceful time exploring the local area.

The charm of the original features, such as the oak floor upstairs, is balanced with the modern amenities of a well-equipped kitchen, bathrooms and comfy beds.

There is a separate dining and sitting room with the original old post office situated at the front of the cottage, providing a further room to relax in.

The cottage welcomes dogs so your four-legged friend is able to join you while you explore Suffolk. In the main cottage there are three bedrooms with a shared bathroom.

The fourth bedroom is located in a separate building with its own en-suite shower room and a television providing privacy from the rest of the cottage.

See What our Esteemed Guests Have to say!

We have just enjoyed our fifth stay in The Gildhall in Higham. We love the warmth and comfort of this beautiful period thatched cottage, and the views and walks from it’s own park, and beyond. My dogs enjoy every moment too, Plenty of space to run round the grounds and then home to a cosy kip in front of the aga.The kitchen is beautiful, And besides being very well equipped, it’s a pleasure to cook in and eat at the scrubbed table. Each room is tastefully appointed And really comfortably furnished. The only problem I have with The Gildhall is that I never want to leave! We are looking forward to our next visit already. Thank you Chris.

The Gildhall - February 2024

“We had a wonderful time at this delightful and roomy property. Our family and their partners came to join us. There is plenty of space for six adults and our dog. The garden is fully dog proof and there is lovely parkland adjoining the property. This was our first time cooking with an Aga and thanks to our expert cooks (partners) it was brilliant. Communication with the owners was very easy and they were most helpful. It is a lovely part of the world to visit.”

“We had a wonderful time… the cottage is delightful, warm and cosy yet plenty of  space. The welcome pack was very generous and everything was super clean and comfy. Visited some lovely villages nearby, the garden and huge adjoining parkland were fantastic for the dogs. Thoroughly recommend.”
